Wet Macular Degeneration
Pay Attention to Save Your Sight

Wet Macular Degeneration usually results in more serious vision loss than the dry type. In only about 10 percent of cases, dry MD progresses to this more advanced and damaging form of the eye disease.

With Wet MD, new blood vessels grow in response to signals from the degenerating retinal cells. These signals are a protein called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), targeted in wet MD treatments by anti-VEGF drugs. Because they are fragile, these new vessels are prone to leakage.

This leakage first causes distortion in your vision in proportion to the amount of leakage and swelling. The longer it continues, the greater the permanent damage to light-sensitive retinal cells, which die off and create blind spots in central vision.

When left undetected or untreated, rapid and severe loss of central vision can occur within a short period of time. (Days to weeks)

Wet MD falls into two categories:

Classic. Blood vessel growth and scarring have very clear, delineated outlines observed beneath the retina, usually producing more severe vision loss.

Occult. New blood vessel growth beneath the retina is not as pronounced, and leakage is less evident typically producing less severe vision loss.

The Amsler grid will help you to detect changes in your vision from day to day between visits to the Optometrist. Take the time to do this 30 second test everyday. You may just save your sight by prompt response to changes in your vision.
