The symptoms of dry eyes are the worst thing about dry eye, don't you think? If you couldn't feel it, it wouldn't bother you. Mild dry eye often doesn't feel that bad, or is intermittent so you don't feel the need to do anything about it.
However, mild dry eye is the best time to treat it, before it gets worse.
What are classified as symptoms of dry eyes?
Any given symptom in isolation could be caused by a number of factors, so it is best to see your Optometrist for an examination first. For example: feeling something in your eye could be due to an eyelash growing crooked and poking your eyeball; redness and soreness can have many causes.
Are there different types of dry eye?
Yes. Dry eye sufferers, either from decreased tear secretion or increased evaporation, will frequently notice chronic sandy-gritty irritation in their eyes that gets worse throughout the day. It is important to discover the cause of dry eye in order to treat it in the best way.
A sandy/gritty sensation can also be caused by Meibomitis; an inflammation of the Meibomian glands on the eyelids that produce the lipids to stop tears evaporating too fast. If you have this, you may notice that your symptoms are worse in the morning when you first wake up and improve throughout the day.
After you have had Meibomitis for some time, it can lead to normal dry eye where the symptoms worsen through the day. This leaves you with 2 peaks of symptoms; first thing in the morning and worsening into the afternoon. Without treatment, Meibomitis can destroy the glands.
I don't want to put up with dry eye anymore! What should I do?
I've got bags under my eyes. What can I do about it?
Maybe I've got Conjunctivitis?
