Is Myopia giving you 'headaches'?

Myopia, also know as near sightedness, is one of the leading causes of hassles in the known world. People with this condition can see well up close but not at long distances. How close an object has to be to be seen clearly varies with the degree of myopia. You can see which bottle is the shampoo when in the shower, but can't see your towel at the beach when out in the surf. Some poor sods can't even see the seashore!

Thankfully, this condition is easily treated. Since it is so common, there are actually a lot of options for nearsighted treatments. These include glasses and contact lenses. Surgical methods are also gaining popularity.

Symptoms include:

  • Blurred vision - when looking at distant objects (eg road signs, outdoor sports)
  • Sensitivity to glare (both sunlight and/or driving lights at night)
  • Squinting to see things in the distance.

Types of Near Sightedness

Mild short sightedness is considered up to a degree of -2.00 Diopters. This person's best focus is for distances closer than 50cm.

A medium degree is -2.25 to -4.75 Diopters (closer than 50-20cm).

It is considered to be high if the degree is over -5.00 Diopters.

Extreme amounts (over -10.00 Diopters) get more difficult to treat neatly. Think "Coke-bottles". Contact Lenses can be a nicer look than thick glasses once you get to this degree.

I have a few patients between -10.00 and -15.00 and we have the best result for their vision from Contact lenses.

The worst I have ever seen was -20.00!!

Do near sighted people actually see clearer at close distances compared to someone with normal vision?

No. Their best vision will still only be as good as someone without a vision problem.

Can myopia be cured?

Not as yet. Many people are looking for a cure, though. As yet, we don't know exactly what causes one person in a family to have it and not all their siblings; nor why the first person in a family starts to express it. There does seem to be some kind of combination between heredity and environment.

Hopefully, someone I know will find the cure and share the proceeds with me! There are millions of people worldwide who would benefit from a cure for short sightedness.

Thankfully, it is easy to treat. People with myopia can live normal lives just by using glasses or contact lenses to see in the distance.
