Myopia Treatments
Full of choice in Carlingford

There are various options available in myopia treatments. The most traditional is of course "glasses".

Glasses: Unlike the name, these are rarely made from glass these days. They were made from glass for centuries, until the evolution of plastics in the twentieth century. Optical plastics have the advantages of being lighter and thinner and more impact resistant. The plastics themselves are not as scratch resistant though. This is overcome by putting scratch-resistant topcoatings on the lenses.

The big advantage is for medium to high prescriptions who now have greater choices in the frames they can wear. Their glasses also don't look as thick as they used to in glass.

See your Optometrist for your best prescription and professionally fitted glasses.

Contact Lenses

These are very popular with myopes. Contact lenses can be put into the eye and left all day for clear and comfortable vision without wearing glasses. Some types can also be left in the eyes overnight. With contact lenses, you can wear normal sunglasses and no-one need know that you have poor vision. You need a professional fitting for contact lenses. Your prescription will determine the power, type, size and material that your lenses need to be for a good healthy fit that is comfortable, has good vision and causes no harm to your eyes. They are not "one-size-fits-all".

Other Myopia Treatments

Refractive Surgery

This has been gaining popularity as technology has improved the safety of the procedure in recent years. The surgeon will use a specilaised laser to reshape the front of the eye to reduce or eliminate your short-sightedness. Be aware that this is a permanent, surgical treatment. You need to take care when considering if this is for you. It is medical surgery and carries risks that glasses and contact lenses do not have. discuss these in full with your surgeon before proceeding. Please also realise that this treatment CANNOT promise to free you from glasses forever. Later in life we all get presbyopia. This means you are likely to need the help of glasses for reading at some point over the age of 40-45, even though your distance vision may still be great.

Cataract Surgery

This can also be considered refractive surgery when distance vision is altered by the careful choice of lens implants. When dealing with cataracts, myopes have the choice of correcting their distance vision and then wearing reading glasses, or remaining short-sighted to keep reading ability. Discuss this with your Optometrist before being referred to a surgeon.
