Proper Macular Degeneration Test

with Free Macular Degeneration Grid

A proper macular degeneration test is performed by an eye care professional, such as an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist. The eye doctor will closely examine the integrity of the tissue at the macular of the eye and recommend action if there are any abnormalities. The photo below shows an obvious example of drusen - the lumps in the retina that distort your vision.

macular degeneration 01

Compare that to a photo of a healthy eye here: healthy retina 01 This retina is all nice and pink. There are no drusen visible, the yellow spots that are so visible in the other photo.

  1. Wear your normal reading glasses or contact lenses.
  2. Stand/sit about 13inches/33cm from the grid in good lighting.
  3. Cover one eye and stare at the dot at the centre of the grid.
  4. If you see wavy, distorted or broken lines you may be displaying symptoms of Macular Degeneration. Contact your eyecare provider immediately.
  5. Repeat for the other eye.
