eye exam
by: Anonymous

on my eye exam the prescription reads right eye +50-50x55 lefy eye +25-25x106/ +200 i also havw glaucoma what do these numbers mean

Hi anonymous. Let's just take your right eye example. If the shape of the front of an eye is oval rather than round, the rays of light passing through one meridian of the eye, the axis of the astigmatism (55 degrees in your eg.), are brought to focus at the retina whilst the rays of light passing at right angles to it are brought to focus behind the retina. The image formed on the retina is blurred when the eye is at rest. In order to correct the blur a lens with power of +0.50 in the meridian at right angles to your astigmatism but zero power (+0.50-0.50=zero) at 55 degrees is required. It is confusing I know! +2.00 is the additional power required for the reading prescription and is added to the first number.
ie Your distance prescription reads R: +0.50/-0.50x55 L: +0.25/-0.25x106 Near Reading prescription R:+2.50/-0.50x55 L:+2.25/-0.25x106. Hope you find this helpful.

AXIS Interpretation
by: Anonymous

I had an eye exam 3 years ago and the AXIS for my left eye was 085. Last week I had an exam and my AXIS for the left eye is 078. Do you think this is an error? Should it be that much difference and what does this lower number (078) mean better or worse for my situation?

Hi anonymous, in optics the axis of a prescription sits between 0-180degrees. The left eye axis in your question is 85degrees and 78 degrees. A 7degree difference is really not significant unless you suffer from high astigmatism in which case even a few degrees of difference can be quite noticeable.

my new glasses are not working for me
by: Anonymous

i just got a new pair pair of glasses and i had trouble seen with them,
the eye Dr.office remake my glasses to a plastic material but still have trouble seen with them.
i really think i need to have my eye exam again.

I hope things have improved since you asked this question! It's always a good idea to have your eyes looked at again if you can't see through your new glasses. The trouble may not necessarily be the lens material - something may have changed since having your initial eye test.

Prescription after surgery
by: Sandra

I just had cataract surgery on my right eye, and got a new prescription for new glasses.I am not sure they are right for me. Can you tell me what they mean. Right SPH -0.75 CYL +0.25 Axis 30
Left SPH +1.75
ADD R +3.00
ADD L +3.00

I seem to be walking around sorta dizzy but seated I am fine. I had the prescription checked by the optician and he said I just need to give them a few days for my eyes to adjust,it had only been 4 days, but I am sorta sick to my stomach so I am wondering if I have too strong of a prescription since I have had the surgery only on my right eye. Can you please advise me? Thank you.

Hi Sandra,
Congratulations on your surgery! Unfortunately I can't give you much help on this one. there is nothing about your prescription that would commonly make someone feel dizzy, except for the fact that there is now a significant difference between your two eyes. Do you plan to do surgery on the left eye as well?

Give it some time to settle down after the surgery, then talk with your Optometrist if it persists.
