I don't think I need glasses - should I have an eye exam anyway?
Answer:
Adults should have a comprehensive eye examination every two years. This is to screen you for signs of major eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. It is best for these diseases to be detected early, when they can be most effectively treated.
The risk for eye diseases like these increases over the age of 40. One in five people over the age of 50 have signs of macular degeneration.
So if all seems to be going well with your eyes, check them at two year intervals.
If you notice problems, get them checked by your Optometrist straightaway. If you are at increased risk of eye disease because it is in the family, or you have been told by your doctor/Optometrist that you are at risk, then they will recommend you are examined at shorter intervals. Follow their recommendation.
Children should be examined by an Optometrist at the age of 3, then every two years, or sooner if problems arise. (See Children’s vision)
