Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis

Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis is more common in soft Contact Lens wearers, but also occurs with prosthetic eyes or surgical sutures. The eye becomes inflamed and itchy due to regular physical irritation of the object rubbing on the eyelids.

It is called “giant papillary” because of the huge lumps called papillae that arise under the eyelids. This condition is extremely itchy.

Contact Lens wearers can induce this condition by poor cleaning of their contact lenses making the surface rough against the eyelids. Doing this for long enough can result in GPC and contact lens intolerance. Every time you then put in a contact lens, it flares right back up. Just another reason to take good care of yourself in the first place!

Some people can get this condition even with good hygiene, though. Then the options need to be discussed with your Eyecare Practitioner:

  • A different type of contact lens (RGP) may be appropriate
  • Different cleaning solutions may cause less of a reaction
  • Different material or polishing of an ocular prothesis
  • Removal of surgical sutures
