Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lens
Optometrist Advice on RGP Lenses
The Gas Permeable contact lens is a rigid lens designed to sit on the eye and create a new, regular front surface for the eye. This produces great clarity of vision through evening out imperfections in the eye’s surface.
Being rigid, it takes longer to get used to the feeling of this lens in the eye. For this reason they are best suited to people who wear their lenses every day.
These were the lenses used before the advent of soft and disposable lenses. Improvements in technology have kept the materials used in these lenses state-of-the-art. They are very breathable, healthy lenses.
The lower popularity of these lenses is due to the popularity of disposable, occasional use lenses.
These lenses are used for special conditions and purposes such as keratoconus and post-graft lenses. They are also used for Orthokeratology designs to compress the eye overnight for daytime freedom from lenses.
Daily Disposable Lenses – Wear them once then throw them away Extended Wear Lenses – For those who wear lenses for long hours or want to sleep in lenses Daily Care Lenses – Wear lenses in the day, take them out at night Toric Lenses – For those with astigmatism Multifocal Contact Lenses – For the over 40s Custom soft lenses – For those whose prescription is out of the range of disposables Novelty Lenses – crazy or realistic coloured lenses
