How to choose Fishing Sunglasses

When choosing Fishing sunglasses or sailing sunglasses, there are two schools of thought:

  • Buy cheap disposable sunglasses
  • Buy good quality sunglasses
Either way, polarized lenses are a must for any kind of watersport. They reduce so much of the glare from reflections off the water. You can see into the water, instead of seeing those reflections. It can interfere with LCD displays, such as some fishfinders. So pop them off to look at the screen.

Cheap disposable sunglasses

The thinking here is that your sunnies are going to get wet, covered in bait and sunscreen and are likely to get lost in the water at some stage. Buy cheap sunnies that you can afford to replace over and over again. For example, Cancer Council Sunglasses - they are polarized but inexpensive.

Good quality sunglasses

When the quality is higher you get better visual clarity. You often have a more comfortable fit, and they will last longer.

Choose models that are designed as for fishing and you can find features like:

  • They float
  • They won't rust in salt water
  • Anti-fog lenses

For freshwater, it is recommended to choose a lens that is brown or copper in colour.

For saltwater go for grey or smoke coloured.

It's a good idea to choose sunglasses that float, or can take a floater cord attached. That way, when you drop them in the water, you have a chance to get them back.
