Dry Eye Treatment for Sore Dry Eyes

Dry Eye Treatment is most effective when the treatment matches the cause, so it is worth seeing your Optometrist for an assessment and recommendation.

Artifical tears are a common treatment that are available over-the-counter. There are a number of brands that approach the problems from different angles.

Refresh Plus Lubricant eye drops - A gentle lubricant, safe for use everyday. Gives relief from the symptoms of dry eye. Contains Carboxymethylcellulose as lubricant, which binds to corneal epithelial cells to mimic natural mucin. Available in preservative-free single dose units.

Systane - contains 2 lubricating agents: Polyethylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol. Available in preservative-free single dose units or a 10mL bottle with gentle preservative.

Theratears - A drop on the market that takes a different approach. The inventors have attempted to help ease the underlying causes of dry eye by adjusting the hypotonicity to drive water back into the corneal cells, rather than just lubricating the surface.

Other dry eye treatment options:

Lacrisert: a slow release lubricant insert for use in moderate to severe dry eye. The insert is placed in the pocket of the lower eyelid and slowly dissolves throughout the day to provide relief from dry eye symptoms.

Tears Again is an easy to use spray from Biorevive that supplements the lipid layer of the tears to prevent evaporation. The spray can be used with the eyes closed, with or without makeup (won't make most mascaras run).

Restasis eye drops: A prescription medication in eye drop form to combat inflammation. Restasis is not appropriate for immediate relief for an uncomfortable irritated eye as it may take up to 6 months for maximum improvement. Talk to your doctor if you have persistent severe dry eye. (may not be available in Australia)
