Haunted by Dark Circles Under Eyes?

The appearance of dark circles under eyes is due to increased visibility of the blood vessels where the skin is thin. They are not related to eye health and will not affect your vision in any way. Keeping your skin healthy can help reduce the appearance of dark circles and shadows.

Common causes include:

Poor sleep

Are you sleep deprived? In one sense the cure is simply to get more sleep. This isn’t always easy – especially if you have a young baby, do shift work or your partner snores.

Poor diet

Your body needs lots of fresh building blocks to replenish and restore the skin. Eating plenty of fresh food, keeping a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water can contribute to healthy skin.

Genetics

For some people, dark circles under eyes are an inherited trait - makeup tricks can help reduce their visibility.

Allergies

If dark circles appear alongside a runny nose, blocked sinuses or sneezing then perhaps you have an allergy - dark circles are often a symptom of hayfever. Over-the-counter antihistamines can help provide some relief from symptoms. Consult your physician for personal advice.

What do I do about Itchy Eyes?

Remedies for bags under eyes

Cooling the skin can help reduce swelling:
  • Chilled teabags (especially green tea) can be placed on the area for 5-15 minutes.
  • Chilled cucumber slices can be placed on the area for 5-15 minutes.

Makeup can be used to conceal it

  • Use a concealer that is yellow based in tone to cancel out the dark circles under eyes. A pink-based concealer will only make it look worse.
  • Clever use of highlighter powders can remove the appearance of shadows. Consult a makeup artist near you

Get healthy

  • Plan your time so that you get sufficient sleep
  • Reduce stress in your life – have a holiday, have a massage, have a hot bath
  • Drink more fresh water – not soda or coffee; but green tea is also good
  • Take a walk in the fresh air – exercise is rejuvenating
  • Stop smoking
  • Eat healthy, fresh foods (Vitamins for healthy eyes)
