Children & Eye Exams

by Sheri
(Sydney)

How old should my son be for his first eye exam?
Answer: I recommend routine examinations for children from 3 years of age.

At this age they are able to communicate with the examiner, for a more reliable result than at earlier ages.

Obviously, they do not have the same kinds of tests as adults. Age specific tests will be used to determine if the child is seeing well for their age and developing normally.

Large problems like a turned eye, or a large prescription that is likely to result in a turned eye, will be treated. Small ones will just be monitored over time, if all else is developing normally.

Some of the tests administered will not rely on the child being a verbal communicator, though it does make it easier!

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or eyes, consult an Optometrist.
